Something exciting has been brewing at Hyundai HQ. It looks like an Elantra. It acts like an Elantra. It sounds like an Elantra. Could it be a new 2020 Hyundai Elantra? You bet.
The Elantra has always been impressive (read about the 2013 model that traveled over 1 million miles on its original powertrain). Now, following an inspired facelift last year, the upscale 2020 Elantra is even more impressive, proving once and for all that cars – that is, affordable, well-equipped, good cars – still have a place in our crossover-crowded world.
2019 vs. 2020 Elantra: What’s New?
Outside, the 2020 Elantra see some noticeable changes. Headlights are more prominent and feature italicized turn signals. A low-mounted, hexagon front grille melds into a gorgeously sculpted bumper with cone-shaped fog lights. In the back: a ducktail deck lid, which gives way to down-sloping taillights. Even the Elantra’s front hood looks swanky; its coupe-like clamshell styling invites you to open it up in search for a pearl – and, lo and behold, there is one: the Smartstream Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT).
All new Elantra sedans drop that pesky manual transmission – manuals account for a measly 2% of all car sales in the U.S. – and adds the new IVT, a class-exclusive CVT that increases the Elantra’s combined MPG by about 6%.
Also added to the mix is the Idle Stop/Go feature on the 2020 Elantra ECO model. Idle Stop/Go, Hyundai’s innovative system that helps you utilize every drop of fuel in the tank, is quite revolutionary for a non-EV. Every time you come to a stop, the Elantra ECO will turn off to conserve all that liquid-dinosaur. When you’ve got a green light, simply take your foot off the brake pedal and the IVT will reengage.
Base Hyundai Elantra SE trims expand its standard fare, too. Included in the entry-level SE sedan are features like dual-zone automatic climate, a brighter 3.5-inch instrument cluster, and safety systems such as Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Attention Warning, and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. Those latter additions should guarantee the 2020 Elantra a place on the IIHS Top Safety Picks list.
In with the New.
In with the Old.
The IVT-equipped 2020 Elantra – which is available for sale and lease right now at our Birmingham Hyundai dealership – returns with much of last year’s verve. The base 2.0L 147-horsepower engine continues to chug along on Elantra SE, SEL, Value, and Limited trims. The Elantra ECO presses onward with its 1.4L turbo-4 that makes 128 horsepower. Range-topping Sport trims come with a vivacious 1.-6L turbo-4 that makes 201 horsepower. Pick your poison.
A class-exclusive hands-free smart trunk is one of the Elantra’s claims to fame. Owners needn’t perform an Irish jig under the bumper to activate the trunk; instead, just stand a few feet behind the trunk and open sesame. It’s the only sedan in the compact-car class to offer this, if we didn’t already mention that.
Hyundai Elantra Limited models come packaged with standard wireless QI phone charging. The charging pad is cleverly and conveniently bundled in its own cranny at the base of the central stack, right beside the 12V adapter and USB and AUX ports.
In fact, the entire cabin is cleverly designed to maximize passenger space. Even as a self-proclaimed compact sedan, the 2020 Elantra offers interior volume (96 cubic feet) comparable to that of larger midsize cars. Now you can bring 4 coworkers to lunch.
Other returning features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Clari-Fi audio, HD Radio, Blue Link, and a stunning 8.0-inch touchscreen.
We’d also be remiss if we didn’t mention Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, which is included in every new 2020 Elantra sold. Best of luck finding a warranty that good on another compact sedan priced under $17,500.
